Carl Chapple studied painting at St Martin’s School of Art, London and spent time in Greece, Turkey and Italy, where he drew a great deal and further developed his interest in Classical and Renaissance painting and sculpture.
Since moving to South Wales in 2003 Chapple has worked from life in his studio in Barry. He works in oil – on canvas and small panels – and in charcoal on paper.
Although primarily interested in the nude, portraiture has recently become a central element of Chapple’s work, as he attempts to reflect something of the characters, ideas and moods of his sitters, as well as impart something of the stillness and silence that painting from life involves.
